Alice.com – How the Brady’s really survived…

screenshot.4 There comes  a time when every technology writer has to admit a simple truth – shiny toys are great, but most people are interested in improving their day to day.   Today’s post is purely practical – it’s not a site for posting to twitter or writing blogs – it’s a site to make sure you never run out of soap called Alice.com.

Alice.com has a very clear objective: to help you save money and time while keeping track of the stuff we normally forget to buy.screenshot.1

You start by creating an account, providing a small amount of info about you (how many people are in your family?) and then Alice uses this information to build an empty shopping list.  As an example, I don’t have children, so kid’s toothpaste is not something that I need on my list (although I could have added it if … I were a bit strange).

screenshot.2Once you’ve got an empty  shopping list, you only have to supply the brand that you prefer for each item and the Alice will help you place your first order (see the picture to the left).  It’s not the most scintillating fun, but when it’s done, Alice will remind you of future orders (when it thinks you’ve run out) and get you coupons so you’re saving money.  That sure beats going aisle to aisle in the grocery store trying to remember the items on the list you left at home…

What more can I say?  It’s a time and money saver.  Give it a shot and let me know your thoughts in the comments.

Enjoy

Helpful – alleviates me of wife-like list making!

It’s been a while since this was first posted. I’d like to know how this has been working out. It seems cool and very promising but a few points in the 5 minutes I’ve been on it so far. It would be cool in general if there was a way to get site feedback from some of these suggestions and update these posts. I’ve tried several of the suggestions over time. Most of them I like; there were a few that “meh…” I would like to know what the consensus was and what people’s pain points were.

    1. Basket instead of single item for a need. There should be options for specific products, any product, any within a brand, or the ability to select several products that you consider perfect substitute. Not to get too personal but I use Old Spice deodorant. I don’t care which so long as it’s Old Spice. This way, the sales/coupons and prices can optimize the fact that I do not distinguish between them. Another example would be Q-tips. I don’t care which brand – I would just want the cheapest.

    2. Price per unit. There needs to be price per unit measurements. I noticed this when trying to chose Q-tips. My corner grocery in Washington Heights, NY has it so why can’t they.

On a separate note. Alice.org is a cool way to learn OOP – object oriented programming.
