drop.io like it's hot…
Drop.io (which I pronounce drop eee oh but I’m honestly not sure…) is a site for sharing files. The limit of your “drop” is 100MB (To put it into context, my masters thesis was a word document with a few hundred pictures and it was 30MB). You upload a file, click share and a link is provided. This is what drop.io does best and it’s the core of their service.
However, in one board meeting, someone must have asked if they could add a feature or two, or five or ten… What they added makes Drop.io a fantastic service for oooooh so many reasons. Here’s a rundown of what it does:
Your own little corner of the net…
First off, your drop is a place. It has an address and the ability to store multiple files. You can assign a guess password and permissions, allowing your guests to add content (or not). You can then share out the link with anyone and if they have the password, they can download every file in the drop.
If you can see it, it can be dropped…
Once you have a drop, you can email, text or even fax files into the drop. An email address is provided for emails and attachments are saved. Text messages with pictures can be sent to the Drop.io phone number. Lastly, a fax number is provided with a special cover sheet that allows drop.io to capture incoming faxs as PDF documents.
Phone it in…
I’ll be honest – I do not understand how this feature can be free, but you can record voicemails for yourself and they are saved in your drop. This is useful for those who want to record a long list of things ot remember, but don’t have a pen handy.
Facebook
If you are on Facebook, you can share your drop with your facebook friends via a handy application. I’m sure that someone, somewhere is doing something interesting with this feature…
Get alerts
Your drop can give you a heads-up when a guest has posted something, either by email or by text message – a great way for collaborating on a file or monitoring changes.
Con-calls for free!
My favorite feature? A conference call line comes with each drop for free. You can send out your dial in number + pin to everyone in your meeting and drop.io provides the bridge.
Artists don’t have to starve…
Another neat feature is the ability to charge for access to your drop content. For example, an artist could charge for downloads of pictures and have a public gallery.
I’ve tried to keep this short and sweet, but there are even more things that can be done with Drop.io (there are even third party tools that are built on top of the site). I hope you’ll try it out and hopefully, this will reduce (again) the size of your email inbox.
