Iphone App Road Map: getting you started!

If Just an Asterisk had an Iphone app...

So you got an iphone…(I am very jealous!). Everyone you know has a bunch of cool apps on their phone – apps for finding movies, food or parties, apps for connecting with friends, checking bank balances, or posting to blogs. The question now is simple: which apps do you choose? There are simply too many good apps out there and despite the fact that you (or someone who loves you) splurged and got the 16gb version, it’s probably not reasonable to download all the apps… (There are 10,000 + in the store now). Also, to put it as classily as possible: some of these suckers are expensive. You have some tough decisions to make, but as always, we’re here to help. What follows is a roadmap for getting yourself up and running. It is not a list of important apps – that would be out of date… now. Instead this is a resource list that will hopefully allow you to be ahead of the curve.

Note: this list was compiled on 2/7/2009. I’m sure that we’ll have to write this article again in < 6 months… Don’t take this as a be-all-end-all list. Updates are guaranteed!

Step 1:
Try out these links to get a baseline set of apps. This is the part of the list that is out of date as soon as you’ve read it…
the apps that (supposedly) will make you want a phone from tnerd
gizmodo’s essential 20 iphone apps
time magazine’s top ten
lifehacker’s best apps for New Year’s resolutions
Gizmodo’s best apps of 2008

Step 2:
Start checking one of the following blogs from time to time, as they do most of the legwork for you!
lifehacker’s iphone articles (updated constantly)
gizmodo’s iphone apps (updated weekly)

Step 3:
Check out the top charts:
apptism’s list
at app shopper
at the apple store (like on your phone)

wade through tons of apps:
at appbeacon

That should keep you busy for a while! Please do not send any angry spouses this way… I’m not responsible for the bill on any app shopping frenzy.

Enjoy ~ab

Yes! You doooooo care AB! Thanks for hitting us with the iPhone app linkage, lots of new places for me to look for ways to decrease my ever-questionable productivity.

    Take it easy pal.

Allow me to go slightly askew – tangential …. Don’t think I would qualify for the AT&T cell phone account but as long as I am a SB employee I have an AT&T wifi account – is the IPod touch my solution for basic internet /email use and downloading my NPR & other podcasts?
